Easy to Assemble Pro Lamp Building and Video Lighting Tutorial and Diagrams

Proper lighting can make or break your video. Lighting is even more important when you are creating video for chromakey and transparency (alpha channel) effects. I consult a professional video producer on a daily basis who has given me a lot of tips to help me as I learn how to produce videos.

This guy knows his stuff as he works in the industry every day for various online and offline companies as well as networks like bbc, cnn, pbs, and the Discovery Channel.

I asked him if he would write a short concise tutorial on lighting complete with diagrams that I could give to you to help you get your lighting right.

You might consider printing out that Manual. It is very good concise and written by a real producer who shoots film almost every day. You will find the diagrams very helpful.

A couple things to remember:

1. When you are lighting and shooting video that you will be using chromakey effects in later you want to light your key as evenly as possible so that the color is even. This will help make the actual keying (taking out the background) process easier in the software that you use.

2. Here is an equation that you should remember when you are connecting your video lights to an electrical circuit and powering them on:

Watts divided by Volts = Amps

The average home circuit can handle 20 Amps. So three lights totaling 1500 watts divided by 120 volts = 12.5 amps. Try to pull 17 amps or less so that you do not blow a circuit breaker or in older homes pop a fuse.

Below are Training videos on building three types of video lights including pro soft boxes.

Additionally the last video in the multi-track player will run through a series of tests of a half dozen light types showing you what to expect from each type and helping you to make the right decision on what lamps to build or buy to fit your needs.
